Cyanotype chemical refill developed by the Dutch manufacturer PAR (Print-Art-Read). It includes the two photosensitive components needed to prepare cyanotype emulsion, ready to mix and create the following solutions:

Solution A: 100 ml of potassium ferricyanide
Solution B: 100 ml of ferric ammonium citrate

When both solutions are mixed in equal parts, they produce 200 ml of photosensitive cyanotype emulsion, ready to be applied on paper, textile or other surfaces.

This format is mainly intended as a refill for cyanotype kits once the chemicals run out, although it can also be used directly to prepare the emulsion and work with the process from scratch.

Cyanotype Chemical Refill

This PAR cyanotype refill includes the two chemicals needed to prepare the photosensitive emulsion used in the cyanotype process: ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

The amount included in this format allows you to prepare 200 ml of photosensitive cyanotype emulsion.

Unlike laboratory formats in which chemicals are sold in bulk and must be weighed manually, such as the Químics Dalmau kit, this refill comes in two pre-measured and labelled bottles, making the solutions easy to prepare without scales or calculations.

This format is mainly intended as a refill for PAR cyanotype kits, although it can also be used without any problem to work with any cyanotype process.

What’s Included in this Cyanotype Refill

The product comes in a recyclable kraft paper bag containing the two bottles needed to prepare the emulsion.

Product contents:

  • 2 bottles of cyanotype chemicals (components A and B)

  • basic instructions for preparing the solutions

The bottles contain the photosensitive components ready to be mixed with water and used to prepare the two required cyanotype solutions.

Once solutions A and B have been prepared, the final emulsion is obtained by mixing both parts in equal proportions just before applying it to the surface.

Amount of Emulsion that Can Be Prepared

This refill contains the same quantity of chemicals included in the DIY Cyanotype Kit – Paper by PAR.

The amount included allows you to prepare the following:

  • 100 ml of solution A

  • 100 ml of solution B

Once both are mixed in equal parts, you obtain 200 ml of photosensitive cyanotype emulsion.

This amount allows multiple prints to be made, although final yield will depend on factors such as:

  • the type of paper or support used

  • the way the emulsion is applied

  • the type of brush, roller or applicator

  • the size of the prints

A Practical Way to Keep Working with Cyanotype

These refills are mainly intended for continuing to work once the chemicals in cyanotype kits are finished.

Many users start with complete kits and, once they become familiar with the process, simply need to replenish the chemicals to keep experimenting.

The refill format makes this easy without needing to buy the full kit again.

Compatible with Paper, Textile and Other Supports

The cyanotype emulsion prepared with these chemicals can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces, including:

  • watercolour paper

  • printmaking paper

  • natural textiles such as cotton or linen

  • wood or cardboard

Once the emulsion has been applied, the image is obtained through exposure to sunlight or UV lamps and then developed with water.

Not all surfaces produce the same results, so it is advisable to test different supports and emulsion quantities.

Difference from Other Cyanotype Chemicals

There are different ways to buy the chemicals needed to make cyanotype.

In some cases, such as laboratory chemicals, the components are sold in bulk and must be weighed manually to prepare each solution.

In the case of PAR refills, the components already come prepared in the required proportions, which makes the process easier and avoids mistakes in the preparation of the mixtures.

This makes this format especially practical for those who prefer a straightforward and direct system.

Responsible Production

Products by the Dutch manufacturer PAR (Print-Art-Read) are assembled in a local workplace in the Netherlands that employs people with limited access to the standard labour market.

The product has also been designed with sustainability and recyclability in mind.

The refill is presented in a recyclable kraft paper bag.

Country of origin: European Union (Netherlands).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a kit to use this refill?

Not necessarily. Although these refills are designed to replenish cyanotype kit chemicals, they can also be used to prepare the emulsion and work with the process from scratch.

What chemicals are included in this refill?

It includes the two components needed to prepare cyanotype emulsion:

  • ferric ammonium citrate

  • potassium ferricyanide

What surfaces can it be used on?

The emulsion can be applied on paper, natural textiles such as cotton or linen, wood or cardboard.

How is exposure done?

Cyanotype prints can be made with direct sunlight or using UV lamps or exposure units similar to those used in screen printing.

Can I use this refill with other kits or chemicals?

Yes. The components used in cyanotype are standard within this photographic process, so they can be used together with other common materials and tools.
