Lascaux Tusche Wash Spray is a spray-format tusche designed to create textures, grain and irregular tonal effects when producing hand-made positives (photoliths). Spray application allows spontaneous marks, fragmented washes and atmospheric effects that cannot be achieved with a brush.
It is particularly suitable for screen printing, lithography, photogravure and other photomechanical techniques where organic, expressive or experimental results are desired. 500 ml format.
How Tusche Wash Spray Behaves: Grain, Dispersion and Atmosphere
Controlled spraying
Spray application allows control over grain density and tonal intensity depending on distance, pressure and number of layers.
Organic granular texture
Spraying creates irregular particles that translate into visible grain and organic patterns, ideal for breaking flat areas or adding visual noise to a positive.
Layered applications
Multiple successive layers can be built up to increase tonal density while preserving textural richness.
Lithography and related techniques: atomized effects difficult to achieve with traditional tools.
Photogravure and photopolymer: plates with depth and tonal richness.
Artistic offset and zincography: introduction of graphic noise and autographic texture.
Creative cyanotype: soft spray effects for painterly positives.
Experimental techniques: combinations with masks, resists, liquids and abrasives.
Advantages Over Other Photolith Methods
Compared to opaque pens
Allows working with large areas, grain and atmospheres, not just lines or flat shapes.
Compared to brush-applied Tusche Wash
Introduces a different visual language: more spontaneous, fragmented and gestural.
Compared to digital photoliths
Not dependent on digital halftones or resolution: results are organic and manually controlled.
How to Use Lascaux Tusche Wash Spray
1. Shake thoroughly before use
Proper homogenization is essential to ensure even spraying.
2. Protect the working area
Spray application creates dispersion; work in a ventilated and protected space.
3. Apply onto transparent support
Recommended:
matte polyester film for printmaking
drafting film
technical acetate
Adjust distance to control grain.
4. Build up layers gradually
Apply thin layers, allowing drying between coats.
5. Intervene if desired
Combine with:
liquid Tusche Wash
scratching
abrasives
masks or resists
6. Expose
Test exposure times:
shorter exposures → more visible grain
longer exposures → subtler texture
Practical Video Demonstration
Below you can watch a practical demonstration of Lascaux Tusche Wash Spray by artist and printmaker John McGowan, showing spray effects, grain control and transfer to screen printing and photomechanical processes.
Technical Tips Based on Practical Tests
Work at different distances to control grain size and density.
Thin layers offer better control than one heavy application.
The type of transparent support affects spray definition.
Combining it with other Tusches expands your mark-making and texture range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it replace liquid Tusche Wash?
No. It is complementary. The Spray is designed for sprayed textures; the Wash is for controlled washes.
Can I use it as a background for screen printing?
Yes. It is ideal for atmospheric backgrounds, organic grain and hand-made textures.
Will the texture transfer correctly?
Yes, as long as exposure time and mesh/emulsion are adjusted properly.
Is it suitable for fine work?
Yes—use light, controlled layers and adjust the spraying distance for finer grain.
